Non-conforming plots in Marblehead

Much of Marblehead was built before its current zoning rules which means many of its homes would be illegal if they were built today. If you own one of these homes, known as “pre-existing nonconforming” you require extra permitting relief for any changes to your home. This makes it harder to adapt your property to fit your needs including adding living space, accommodating family, aging in place, or simply making changes that fit naturally with the neighborhood.

Our zoning should reflect the Marblehead we actually have, not treat much of it as an exception.
